The AI video and podcast editor that works by editing text, not a timeline.

Descript transcribes your recording automatically, then lets you cut, reorder, and clean up video or audio by editing that transcript, with an AI co-editor and voice cloning built in to handle retakes and filler words.

What can Descript do?

Edit video and audio by editing the transcript: Delete, move, or retype words in the transcript and the underlying footage or audio cuts, reorders, or updates to match, with no timeline scrubbing needed.

Direct an AI co-editor with plain instructions: Tell it things like "remove the filler words" or "make a 30-second clip for LinkedIn" and it reads the script and footage to carry out the edit itself.

Clone your own voice: Train a voice model from a few minutes of your own audio, then fix a flubbed line by typing the correction instead of re-recording it.

Clean up audio automatically: Strip background noise, room echo, and hiss from a recording in one click, useful for audio recorded outside a proper studio.

Fix a speaker's eye contact: Automatically adjusts a speaker's gaze toward the camera when they are reading from a script or notes just off-frame.

Record your screen for B-roll: Capture your screen directly inside Descript to drop into a video without switching to a separate recording app.

Translate a video into another language: Generate a translated version of a video's audio and captions on the Business plan and above, across dozens of languages.

Generate captions, show notes, and social clips: Automatically produce captions, written show notes, and short social-ready clips from a longer recording.

Record remotely with a guest: Use its remote recording feature to record a remote interview or podcast guest in-browser, with each track kept separate for editing.

Pros

Editing by text is genuinely faster: Cutting a video by deleting words in a transcript is a real workflow improvement over scrubbing a timeline, especially for talking-head and interview content.

The AI co-editor cuts down manual editing time: Handing off filler-word removal, retake selection, or a rough cut to the AI co-editor removes a lot of the tedious first pass of editing.

One tool covers recording through distribution: Screen recording, transcription, editing, captions, and social clips all live in the same place, instead of stitching together separate apps.

Cons

Media hours and AI credits run out fast: Even the Creator plan caps out at 30 media hours and a fixed AI credit pool per month, which heavy weekly podcasters or video creators can burn through quickly.

Free plan exports are watermarked and capped at 720p: The free tier is really a trial: only 60 minutes of media a month and every export carries a watermark until you pay.

Performance slips on longer, heavier projects: The editor can get slow and occasionally unstable once a project stretches into a long video or has a lot of tracks and media, so it is less dependable for big, complex edits than for short ones.

Knowtably's Take

Descript is at its best when you are editing talking-head video or a podcast and want to cut by rewriting a transcript instead of scrubbing a timeline. The AI co-editor genuinely removes grunt work, and its voice cloning turns a misread line into a typo fix.

We'd choose this if: You edit talking-head video, interviews, or podcasts regularly and want an AI co-editor plus voice cloning in one place.

We wouldn't choose this if: You need unmetered editing time or heavy multi-camera video work, since Descript caps both media hours and AI credits by plan.
